Chicago is a city with a thriving sports scene, and many major sporting events take place in the city. Chicago’s Sports Commission is an important agency that seeks major sporting events and supports high-profile athletes. In addition, the commission helps the city promote its reputation in the world of sports.
The city is home to several major sports teams, including the NBA’s Chicago Bulls and the NFL’s Chicago Bears. The Bulls, led by ‘Air’ Jordan, were among the most dominant teams in the 1990s. In addition, the Chicago Blackhawks, who won the Stanley Cup twice this decade, are also a favorite of Chicago sports fans.
As sports became more popular, newspaper sports departments expanded and hired specialized sports writers. Today, sports pages are usually found at the back of the paper, providing plenty of information about athletes and major sporting events. However, sportswriters tended to focus on atmospheric description of major sporting events, as opposed to reporting on the results. Eventually, newspaper owners realized that sports readers often consulted the back page before they turned to the front page for more important news.
Today, globalization has transformed sports into an international phenomenon. Transnational corporations are trying to sell all kinds of products to every potential consumer. Today, sports are not only sources of pleasure, but also symbols of power, prestige, and distinction. The globalization of sports has also impacted local cultures.
