Chicago’s Sports Events Culture

Chicago has a strong sports events culture, and is home to many professional and collegiate sports teams. The city has been named one of the top 15 sports cities in the world by Sporting News three times. Its teams include the Chicago Bulls, which have become perennial powerhouses in the NBA, and the Chicago Blackhawks, which have won two Stanley Cups in recent years.

The growing popularity of sports led to the development of sports desks staffed by specialized journalists. These pages, usually located at the back of the newspaper, featured copious amounts of information about athletes. These writers were primarily focused on the buildup to major sporting events, but they also featured a postmortem dissection of the event. Newspaper proprietors soon realized that sports coverage was often read before news about more weighty subjects.
