Sports Events and Chicago Culture

Chicago is the third largest city in the United States with a population of nearly three million people. This cosmopolitan city is home to numerous professional and amateur sports teams. It has been named the Best Sports City three times by Sporting News and has consistently made the TSE international ranking of sport cities. It has produced the first Heisman Trophy winner, Jay Berwanger, and has a rich history of athletic success.

Sports events are a pillar of Chicago culture, and many Chicagoans are passionate about their favorite team. While the Bears have a dreadful start to the season, they are always sold out at Soldier Field. A recent video of Jay Cutler’s jersey burning went viral a week before the game, but it didn’t dampen attendance. Chicago sports fans are fiercely loyal, and they’ll do anything it takes to win.

With the development of mass media, sports events shifted from being a sideline to a bona fide industry. The media became more influential and sports entrepreneurs began to understand the role of mass media in creating interest among spectators and sponsors. This changed the nature of sports reporting and led to the creation of sports desks in major newspapers.

Globalization has changed sports as well. As sports have become increasingly popular, transnational corporations have attempted to market them to the world’s consumers. As a result, sports have been marketed as symbols of power, prestige, and distinction.
