Sports Events Culture – Illinois Michigan Business
Having a culture of sports is a positive influence on a community and a society. Major sports events such as the Super Bowl and World Series generate money for good causes and help kids get active. They also contribute to local economies. In 2013, sports helped create 456,000 jobs, according to the Chicago Tribune. In addition, sports generate $600 million for Illinois each year, making it a billion-dollar industry. In 2010, sports generated $340 million for the New York City economy.
Sports also create a lot of passion and joy, as well as extreme raw emotion. Fans are loyal and fierce, and many of them are devoted to the Chicago Bears or Chicago Cubs. The Blackhawks have won two Stanley Cups in 2010, and the Chicago Bulls dominated basketball in the 90s. There is a reason Chicago fans have been named the Best Sports City three times by Sporting News: sports create great passion and excitement.
Sports are also a powerful tool in raising awareness about important issues. In 2013, the Northwestern athletic department started a Reach Out and Reinforce Respect program, which is run by student athletes and is designed to teach kids about the importance of respect. It is also an anti-bullying campaign. On Halloween, the Boston Bruins visited local children’s hospitals to spread smiles and cheers. In the meantime, a video of Jay Cutler’s jersey burning went viral. The video didn’t affect attendance, but it did garner a lot of attention.
