Whether it’s the NBA or NHL, the Chicago sports scene is one for the books. With its high-speed transit system and myriad parks and public spaces, it’s hard to imagine this city ever being anything but itself. In fact, the city has been dubbed the sports capital of the Midwest.
Chicago’s burgeoning amateur sports scene is a testament to how much of a sports fanatic the city is. The city boasts two NHL franchises, two NBA teams, minor league affiliates of both, and numerous other amateur sports teams. In fact, Chicago is the unofficial home of minor league baseball. It also ranks as the largest city in the country with a population of over 3 million. That number might be skewed in the context of baseball, but it’s hard to fault the city for its sporting prowess.
Chicago sports fans are not only avid followers, they’re also quite competitive. It’s only natural to compare your team to the competition. That’s why sports are big business. In 2013, the NBA and NHL generated 456,000 jobs in the state of Illinois, and the Cubs are a money maker if you consider how much money they bring in for a given year. In fact, the best sports teams in the country often come out on top for the competition.
As for the best sports teams in the country, the city has had a few hiccups over the years, but the city has a storied history in the professional sports arena. While the Chicago Cubs may not be the biggest name in town, they’ve had a good run over the years.
