Whether it’s the Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks or any of the other professional or amateur teams, Chicago sports fans are very loyal and passionate. Chicago is considered to be the sports capital of the Midwest, and is home to many teams with league-level talent.
Sports have an impact on the local economy, and the most well-known teams in Chicago generate over $600 million annually. It also creates 456,000 jobs, which helps create an economic boost for the city. Sports also have a positive impact on communities and help kids get active. Sports can also raise awareness about important issues, raise money for worthy causes, and help nations. Sports can create extreme raw emotion, but they can also bring joy.
One example of how sports can help a community is the Reach Out and Reinforce Respect program launched by Northwestern’s athletic department. This anti-bullying campaign is run by student athletes and the athletic department’s community relations team. This program is designed to teach kids about respect and teach them about sports. The students and athletes help to teach the values of respect, courtesy, and fair play, which can be applied to other aspects of life.
Another example of how sports can have a positive impact on communities is the Boston Bruins’ visit to the local children’s hospital for Halloween. The hockey players dressed up as characters from the Disney movie Frozen and cheered up patients. This event helped cheer up the patients and helped to make an otherwise dreary day a little brighter.
