Whether it’s an NHL game, an NBA match, a college basketball tournament, or the World Series, sports fans in Chicago are passionate and dedicated. They are fiercely loyal and have been named the best sports city in the world. Sports have been known to generate a massive impact on local economies, as well as create jobs, raise awareness about important issues, and encourage kids to get active.
Sports are a billion dollar business, and the impact they have on society is both positive and beneficial. In fact, sports create 456,000 jobs and generate $340 million for the economy of New York City in 2010, while boosting Illinois’ economy by more than $600 million. Sports can also help children learn important life skills and teach respect. In 2013, Chicago was named a “sport city of excellence” by Sporting News for the third time.
Sports are also known for inciting great passion and extreme raw emotion. In 2010, Chicago’s Blackhawks won two Stanley Cups. In 2013, the Chicago Bears won the Super Bowl, the first time that a team from Chicago had won a championship since 1985. In 2010, Jay Berwanger, the first recipient of the Heisman Trophy, was from Chicago.
Major sporting events are held in Chicago every year, and millions of people come to watch. While most of the events are sold out, they also tend to be cancelled. So, fans should always check the status of the events directly to ensure that they can attend.
