Besides being the nation’s third largest city, Chicago is also home to some of the largest sporting events in the world. It’s not just the NFL and NBA that make the Big Windy their home turf, though. The city is also home to some of the most elite amateur sports teams in the country. From a purely economic standpoint, the sports industry in Illinois alone generated more than $600 million in revenues in 2010.

The sports industry is big in Chicago and has been in a good place for a while. It’s still one of the top five cities in the nation for per capita sports fanatics, despite the lull following the recession. In fact, it’s one of four US cities with teams in all five major professional sports. And, despite being the smallest of the four, Chicago is home to the biggest concentration of sports enthusiasts.

Aside from the Chicago Cubs and Bears, the Chicago area boasts many minor league baseball and football franchises. Some even make the national stage. It’s also home to one of the world’s most storied NHL franchises, the Chicago Blackhawks. In the past, the Blackhawks have won two Stanley Cups, but were last seen defending their title in 2013.

It’s not often that you find a city in the middle of the country that hosts a plethora of the most prestigious awards. From the Heisman trophy to the Olympic medals, Chicago has a storied history. And, it’s no secret that the city is home to a diverse population, as evidenced by the dozens of ethnicities represented by its residents.
