Chicago News – Sports Events Culture in the Windy City

One of the biggest sports cities in the nation, Chicago is a rabid fan of their respective teams. Having won two Stanley Cups, two Super Bowls and hosting the AFC Championship in 2013, it’s not hard to see why. Having been named the best sport town in the country in 2011, it’s not surprising that fans go all out for their favorites. In fact, if you’re looking for a good time, it’s hard to beat the Chicago Bulls and Cubs.

For a city that has a lot to live up to, it’s no surprise that the fans have been known to throw the occasional tantrum. In fact, there have been several incidents of ad hominems, most notably in 2011, when the NFL decided to play the AFC Championship game in Chicago. Fortunately, the city was spared a tumultuous outing, but not for long. That being said, fans can rest easy knowing that there are still plenty of reasons to go to a sporting event in the Windy City.

For a city that has embraced the sporting tradition, it’s no surprise that the sports industry is among the largest employers in Illinois. A study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that sports generated an estimated 456,000 jobs in the state in 2013. In 2010 alone, the league grossed over $340 million in revenues, or roughly $6 per person per year.
