It’s no secret that the Chicago sports scene has long been a hotbed of talent, passion and camaraderie. It’s also no surprise that the city has earned numerous awards for its slew of athletic accomplishments. In fact, the city has been ranked the best sports town in the world two years running. Whether or not this is a one-off or part of a wider cultural shift is yet to be seen.

Sports as a whole are an industry with an economic infrastructure that’s on par with any bona fide industry. In 2010, the New York City economy benefited from $340 million in sports-related tax revenue, while the state of Illinois raked in $600 million in the same period. Despite the recession, the state’s sports leagues and teams remained a fixture on the big stage. The Chicago Bears and Blackhawks are among the best in their respective leagues and the city has been a major draw for major sporting events.

For instance, the Chicago Bulls dominated basketball in the 90s, while the Blackhawks have won two Stanley Cups in recent memory. Not to mention, the city’s baseball team is also a force to be reckoned with. In terms of aficionados, the city arguably ranks among the most diehard in the league. While many are familiar with the Chicago Cubs and the Bears, fans of the other two marquee franchises are equally as ardent. Moreover, a plethora of teams and leagues have made the city one of the hottest real estate markets in the country. Ultimately, it’s no wonder the city has been dubbed the Best Sports Town in the World.
