Chicago Fire dietitian gives advice on creating healthy habits in 2023

We’re almost a week into the new year, and for some of us that means a week so far of New Year’s resolutions or goals. A survey by Statista found exercising more, getting healthy, and losing weight to be the top resolutions for Americans. Michele Fumagalli, head dietitian for the Chicago Fire, has some expert advice on achieving a more healthy lifestyle.

Oh my goodness we're already a week into The new year almost and for some of us That means a week so far New Year's Resolutions or goals whether you're Hitting them or missing them if you made It this far congrats a survey by Statista found exercising more getting Healthy and losing weight always the top Three resolutions for Americans trying To make those goals and joining us with Someone who knows a thing or two about Goals is the expert at giving advice on Achieving more healthy lifestyle is Michelle fumigali she's the head Dietitian for the Chicago Fire soccer Club welcome Michelle wow thank you so Much for having me happy New Year so Happy New Year to you as well a lot of Folks when the calendar turns to January 1st I'm going to lose weight I'm going To get in shape go dry January but Statistics show only about 25 percent of People adhere to those resolutions after The first month why is that and what Advice do you have to make people stick To those changes they're trying to make With their Lifestyles right so there's Two reasons I would say and motivation Is very high right now in the beginning Of the year right so that motivation Though can cause extremes like you said I'm gonna I'm gonna go go to the gym Every single day I'm going to go on an Extreme diet I'm going to take out

Eliminate a food group and we have to Remember changes is hard change is Really hard and we forget that in the Beginning of the year cold turkey right So you know and and so we make these big We bite off more than we can chew and Then a week two weeks maybe a month Comes by and we don't have it and then The other thing would be Um that that we're not tapping into that Why right we're just doing it out of Obligation now it's the New Year's I Need to make a new goal what should I do I was just tapping into that wine like Hey why do I really need to change Myself like why do I need or why do I Need to improve myself I should say so Finding that that the deeper why and and I think that would that would help People to be motivated past the first Couple days weeks month and how do you Do that because when you want to find That why that could be that motivating Factor right like what are some Suggestions or what are some things that People can tap into to say okay this is Why I'm doing this and this is how I'm Going to do it realistically right Question right so I think before you Even make a goal right our New Year's Resolution we need to look at yourself And evaluate yourself you know what what Are my strengths and weaknesses what do I do really well at taking care of

Myself and what do I not do so well so Maybe you know you're like hey I sleep Eight hours a night and my my sleep's Well or maybe I'm really good with water I hydrate I start the day with water so Looking at yourself what you do well and Then what you don't do so well and Looking at those weaknesses and from Those weaknesses we can find a few Things to start to work on not all the Weaknesses but you know one or two Things and and make micro habits out of Those then we build upon those so maybe We have a goal each month one micro Habit goal and we build each month I'm a Big believer in baby steps and small Victories so to add on that what are Some really simple things that we can do To make incremental change uh in our in Our life to just feel better And I think you hit it on like you want To feel better right you don't want to Maybe not your best but we just want to Continue to feel better and I think you Know one of the main things and I kind Of said it is water hydration like Audrina I saw you filling up your water Over there I was like all right during The break she's just drinking so Beautiful because she drinks Exactly Right so you know it's starting our day With water we we love coffee yes we we Want coffee but we need to drink water

First and after we drink that coffee Let's start water again a cup of coffee At 2 30 in the morning when I get to Work So hopefully you know you have water Maybe on your way in you know have a Water bottle on your way see have a Water bottle on your way in and and then Have that coffee but I think you know Hydration mostly with water and if you Have to add some some different flavors Or something like that to help you drink It Um very important and that's where I Start with the athletes too like how is Our hydration that's the the most basic Thing the next thing I would say is is Our movement throughout the day everyone So so focused on going to the gym which Is great building muscle I'm a huge Advocate for it especially for women Building and maintaining muscle however What are we doing the other 15 hours of The day how are we moving we live in a Sitting world and our bodies wants to Move so I'm not saying we have to hit 10 000 steps a day but meet yourself where You are do we have are we at 3 000 can We do 5 000 and you know just again Making those small realistic goals did You come to the gym with us because it's Such a great motivation I mean she's in the muscle building you Couldn't tell could you yeah I like to

Work out muscle is very important so It's interesting because like some of us You know it's maybe more of a struggle And for some you might feel that Motivation or you might love going to The gym or you might love getting your Steps in so there's that balance right Of like even if you don't love it just Try to get a little bit in right and and That's going into the why right so you Know maybe some females don't like to Lift weights weight resistance and and They have to say well I for osteoporosis This and for my health and so I can see My grandkids grow up and I can you know Be there for my daughter's wedding or Whatever but tapping into that why like I don't really like to do this but I Know I need to take care of my body Right this is the only body we have Become best friends with your body Um and and treat it treat it well so Yeah I mean and you could go on with you Know nutrition and talking about Everyone's so focused on the gym and Then they go to these extremes with what They put into their body and it's Keeping it simple you know can we are we Having breakfast if we're not are we Starving later in the day happens a lot To people can we add protein into every Meal and snack super simple how many Vegetables do we have a day can we add In a vegetable here or there I'm saying

If we have one a day at dinner great Starting point can we add in one more Can we add in one at lunch making it Again realistic and having a starting Point Thank you so much I love the good tips It's a good reminder it's also some good New information for us too so thank you So much for joining us yes I need the Motivation Golly the uh trainer with the Chicago Fire we really appreciate you being here No problem thank you absolutely

Chicago News – Sports Events Culture

It’s no secret that Chicago is a sports town. The city is home to nearly three million residents and boasts a number of storable sporting venues such as Soldier Field and the iconic old-school Bulls. In fact, the city’s athletic culture has spawned several noteworthy franchises and local initiatives of its own. As a result, the ‘Burbs have the dubious distinction of being the largest per capita sports fan base of its kind in the country. So, it’s no surprise that the aforementioned triumvirate has garnered the oh so prestigious Sports City of the Year award.

Despite a slew of controversies and a few omissions, the Windy City still remains one of the most livable metropolises in the nation. Indeed, Chicago has more than its fair share of sporting aficionados, and the illustrious sports franchises are a major draw in the city’s otherwise drab business climate. On top of that, the aforementioned perks have piqued the interest of the general public. For the uninitiated, it can be a bit daunting to start scouting the neighborhood for the next big thing.
