The Windy City and Its Sports Events Culture
Whether you are a diehard sports fanatic or just a casual spectator, there is something to be said for the city that bears the name of the Windy City. Chicago has long been a mecca for fans of all sports, from baseball to hockey to football to basketball. With nearly 3 million residents, Chicago is the third largest city in the U.S. and home to some of the biggest sporting events in the world.
Sports have played an important role in shaping Chicago’s social and economic landscape, not to mention the players. The city is also home to a plethora of amateur sporting teams. Among the most successful in recent years are the NHL’s Blackhawks.
Chicago has long been considered the sport capital of the nation. In fact, the city is one of only four in the country with teams in all five major professional sports. Not surprisingly, the Cubs have been able to generate an impressive $600 million in annual revenue for Illinois. Not to be outdone, the Bears have also been a powerhouse in their own right.
There are several awards that the Windy City has won for its sports culture. Most notably, the city has been named one of the world’s top sport cities by TSE for the past two years. Moreover, the aforementioned award has been presented to the city of its choice for six of the past seven years.
Not only has Chicago been named the sport capital of the nation, it also has been crowned as the most important sports town in the world.
