As a fan of Chicago sports, I can attest that the city has made sports a big part of its cultural life. It is the epicenter of the sports and entertainment industry in the Midwest, and is the home of the National Hockey League’s Blackhawks, Major League Baseball’s Cubs and the NCAA’s Northwestern Wildcats. As a result, sports are a big part of the city’s economy, contributing some $600 million annually to the local kitty.
A number of notable sporting events have taken place in Chicago in recent years. The NBA’s Chicago Bulls took the court on several occasions during the ’90s, and the Blackhawks have won two Stanley Cups in recent memory. The Chicago Cubs have also been a fixture on the Chicago sports scene, winning four world championships and playing in six other playoffs. There are several other teams from which to choose, including the Chicago White Sox, the Chicago Bulls, the Chicago Red Wings, the Los Angeles Angels and the Oakland Raiders.
The city’s resurgence has led to some notable accolades, including a spot in the top 10 of the world’s ten best cities for sports. For a couple of years in a row, the city has been ranked among the best in the world. Having a plethora of prestigious sporting events and venues in your midst is an awesome way to spend a weekend, and it can be a lot of fun for the whole family.
