Sports Events Culture in Chicago
Sports are a big part of the Chicago culture. Not only do they make for great entertainment, they also create jobs and encourage kids to get active. The Chicago Cubs are a good example of how sports can be a boon for the community. They are an active partner in funding athletic programs at local schools.
A recent study in the Journal of Business Administration showed that sporting events in the city have been credited with creating 456,000 new jobs and generating over a billion dollars in the process. While the sports industry hasn’t seen a major shake up in several years, there is reason to believe that the current state of affairs will continue to trend upwards. In fact, Chicago has been recognized as the best sports town in the country, and the city has earned several awards for its sporting accomplishments.
For the first time since World War II, women are now playing in the Big Ten. Women have been inducted into the Hall of Fame for both baseball and basketball. One of the most interesting aspects of the new era is the diversity of players on the women’s teams. During the early days of UChicago, female athletes were a staple in the athletic department.
However, there is a downside to the current state of affairs. With the exception of the University of Illinois at Chicago, the majority of the games are being played on the south side, a geographically and socioeconomically challenged part of the city.
