Chicago’s Sports Events Culture
Having a storied NHL franchise and hosting a minor league baseball team, Chicago is a sporting town. Its sports-centric culture is a testament to the city’s renaissance. Not only does the city have a number of notable amateur sports teams, but it has the highest concentration of sports enthusiasts compared to the rest of the country. So much so that, as of 2013, the city boasts a score of 456,000 jobs devoted to sports related activities.
The city also hosts a number of other major sports events, like the NCAA college basketball championships, the MLB All-Star Game, and the National Football League playoffs. Having a major sporting event in your backyard is a great way to get your kids out and about. It also helps the local economy. A recent study by the American Institute of Sports Medicine found that sports generated more than $600 million in revenue for Illinois in 2010.
The biggest surprise is that there aren’t as many sports-related media awards as there are for music or film. A number of sports-themed accolades have been bestowed on the city, from the best overall sports team to the best high school sports teams. The city is also home to a handful of amateur sports teams that made the national stage.
