Whether you are a diehard fan of basketball, baseball, hockey, or football, Chicago is home to a plethora of professional and amateur sports teams. The city has also topped the list of the best sports cities in America for the past three years.
Sports are an important part of Chicago’s culture. From the Chicago Bulls to the Cubs to the Blackhawks, the city is a sports nerd’s playground. The city has seen its share of success, as well as its fair share of heartbreak. Despite the occasional fumbles, sports provide a healthy dose of competition, fun, and entertainment for the average Joe.
Not only do sports provide great entertainment, they also have a positive effect on the local economy. The Chicago Cubs alone generate more than $600 million in annual revenue for the state of Illinois. The same can be said for the Blackhawks, who won two Stanley Cups in 2010 and 2013.
Although Chicago has its fair share of professional sports teams, the city is also home to a number of amateur sports teams, most notably the Chicago Red Stars of the National Hockey League (NHL). This is the city’s largest sports franchise, and a plethora of games are played on the town’s ice.
Although the most prestigious sports team hasn’t made the playoffs in years, a number of notable moments have made the leap from the minors to the majors. This year’s Chicago White Sox has also made a major splash, signing up the hottest free agent in baseball, Adam Jones.
