In its own right, the city of Chicago has a storied past. Affection for the Bears is the norm and the Blackhawks have won two Stanley Cups. The Bulls of the Midwest dominated basketball in the late 90s and early 2000s. Sports can bring fans together in a way that words and text messages can’t. So how has sports played a role in the city’s renaissance?

For starters, sports events have helped boost the local economy to the tune of more than $480 million. That’s a whole lot of moolah for a town the size of Chicago. Whether it’s a game between the Bears and the White Sox or a day at the lakefront, there’s a reason to get out of the house and get active.

While the Chicago White Sox have been around for more than a century, the Bears have only been in the league for less than 20 years. Nonetheless, they are a force to be reckoned with and the defending champions. Whether they are in the postseason or not, they are a major draw for the city. During the playoffs, they have been especially generous with their charitable contributions. Some notable examples include the Junior Bears, the Chicago Cubs’ charity foundation, and the Bears’ philanthropy fund.
