The Chicago area is home to many great sports teams and fans. Its sporting accomplishments have earned the city a few awards and accolades. Among them is a coveted spot on the list of top 10 sports cities in the world for two years in a row.
Despite its storied past, the present day Chicago has managed to reinvent itself. In particular, the city has made a name for itself as a destination for young, aspiring athletes, as well as those seeking a new start. Whether it’s a college scholarship or a first-rate athletic training facility, the area’s youth are sure to have the tools they need to succeed. This is a boon for both the city and the sport itself.
The sports industry is a large one, with a reported economic impact of $340 million in the New York metropolitan area and $650 million in Illinois alone. In a time when economic downturns are commonplace, a well-oiled sports machine is bound to come in handy. Several major league teams call Chicago home. The Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks, and Bulls have all found success over the years, with the Bulls leading the league in basketball in the mid-aughts.
The sports industry also spawned several media outlets. During the early days of print, sports coverage consisted of specialized journalists and sports desks. During the 1980s, the technology was upgraded to such a degree that the industry became a bona fide industry. Among the city’s most notable achievements are a pair of Stanley Cups, an MLB playoff berth and the lonesome ole elboe.
