Known as the Chicagoland sports capital, it’s no secret that the city has made numerous notable sports related accomplishments. Chicago has hosted major sporting events, including the MLB playoffs in 2010 and 2012. It’s also home to many sports teams, both professional and amateur.
For one, the Chicago Cubs are a major contributor to the economy, contributing over $600 million a year to the local economy. They also provide funding to local athletic programs. And, the Chicago Bears, the best team in the NFL, are a fixture of the city.
The city of Chicago is a sports enthusiast’s paradise. There are several amateur and professional sports teams to choose from, including the Chicago Blackhawks, who have been a powerhouse in the NHL for years. The Chicago Bulls ruled the basketball scene in the 90s, starring Michael “Air” Jordan and a bevy of other luminaries.
The city also hosts several major league sporting events, including the NFL playoffs, the NBA playoffs, the Stanley Cup playoffs, and the World Series. During the off season, Chicago has an extensive minor league baseball system with many minor league teams to choose from. Among the major league teams, the Cubs and Bears have longstanding partnerships, with the Cubs providing funding for the Bears and the Bears helping the Cubs in many other ways.
The city’s sports culture has earned it a spot on several lists, including the Sporting News’ “Best Sports City” award, the TSE’s international Ranking of Sports Cities, the Reader’s Weekly Chef Pop-Up, and the Star Reporter’s top pick, the Chicago x x x.
