Chicago’s Sports Events Culture
Among the many reasons to live in Chicago, one of the biggest is its rich sports culture. It’s one of the three or four major cities in the country with teams in all five of the major professional sports, including football, hockey, basketball and baseball.
While the city is home to a few major sports franchises, it is also home to a bevy of minor league baseball teams and amateur sports leagues. One of the more storied franchises is the Chicago Blackhawks, a hockey team that has won two Stanley Cups over the past 30 years.
The city is also home to the Chicago Cubs, a franchise that generates over $600 million a year for the state of Illinois. That’s enough to fund athletic programs for local schools. The Cubs have also had a few notable achievements in their own right, such as winning the World Series in 2009 and having one of the best mascots in the NFL.
The city’s other major sports teams include the Chicago Bears, which have been in the NFL for more than a century. The Chicago Bulls, meanwhile, dominated the basketball scene in the 1990s. The city also has its share of sports fanatics. Some of the more devoted fans have even made the trip to other cities, such as Chicago’s sister city Toronto.
Chicago’s rich sports culture has also earned it a few prestigious awards, including being named one of the world’s best sports towns for the past two years. That’s not to mention the numerous major sporting events that have been held there.
