Globalization and Sports
Located in the heart of the Midwest, Chicago is the third largest city in the United States and is known for its culture of sports and celebration of the multicultural community. The city has been named as the Best Sports City by Sporting News three times and is home to the NFL’s Chicago Bears, NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks, MLB’s Chicago Cubs and NCAA’s Chicago Bulls.
The modern sports industry has been marketed to the world, and for many people, sports are a sign of power, distinction, prestige, and pleasure. Sports also help create global networks of interdependencies. As these networks grow, it may be that we will see a diminishment of Western power. Moreover, the rise of Asian and African cultures may challenge hegemonic masculine notions of sports.
In the 20th century, a variety of international social movements and transnational cosmopolitan culture came into existence. The rise of the modern economy helped create a world that is now a global marketplace, and the advent of modern technology has helped people and money travel more quickly. Increasingly, local cultures have become more diverse, and sports have become a way to create a sense of identity within a global community. As sports become part of a larger globalization process, it is important to understand how globalization patterns and eddies are influencing the development of sports.
