The Globalization of Sports
Chicago has a rich history and diverse sports culture, and is often called the “Sports Capital of the World.” The city has been named the best sports city in the world three times by Sporting News and has made the TSE’s international ranking of sport cities every year since 2012. The city was the first to award the Heisman Trophy to a player, Jay Berwanger.
Transnational corporations are increasingly involved in the globalization of sports. They try to sell all kinds of products to as many consumers as possible. Sports have become not only sources of enjoyment, but also symbols of power, prestige, and distinction. The internationalization of sports has a profound effect on local cultures. The globalization of sports is part of a wider cultural process, one that may eventually diminish Western power.
